This distance learning course is aimed at veterinarians and veterinary nurses keen to update and improve their understanding and knowledge of feline hyperthyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism is the most common feline endocrinopathy and a common diagnosis made in general practice. In recent years there have been many advances in our understanding of this disease and our ability to treat it. On completion of this module participants should feel confident in their abilities to diagnose and manage this condition.

Specific course aims include:

  • Understanding what hyperthyroidism is, which cats are typically affected and the clinical signs they may show
  • Understanding what subclinical and occult hyperthyroidism are, what they mean to the cat and how they are diagnosed
  • Tips and tricks for diagnosing hyperthyroidism in cats suspected of having this disease but where a normal total thyroxine result has been obtained
    • Understanding the reasons why this may occur
    • Strategies for confirming the diagnosis or ruling out hyperthyroidism
  • Understanding what treatment options exist and how best to select the treatment to suit the patient and owner situation
  • Understanding iatrogenic hypothyroidism and other complications associated with treatment of hyperthyroidism
  • Devising an appropriate long-term monitoring plan for hyperthyroid patients
